Although no fragrance has been added, the pine tar itself has a somewhat robust smell that is best described as smoky burnt wood.
WHAT IS PINE TAR
Pine tar is a thick dark brown sticky syrup extracted from stumps and roots of pine trees under extreme heat and pressure.
BENEFITS OF PINE TAR IN TOPICAL APPLICATIONS
Pine tar has been used in medicine for more than 2000 years to treat a range of skin conditions because of its soothing and antiseptic properties and is thought to exert its effect by reducing DNA synthesis and mitotic activity, which promotes a return to normal keratinisation. In addition, pine tar has been shown to be antipruritic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal. These properties make pine tar suitable for the topical treatment of eczema, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and other dry, itchy, flaky or inflamed skin conditions. It can be used on the entire body, including the face.
HOW IS PINE TAR MADE
Pine tar is made from carbonizing pine stumps and roots at very high temperatures and pressure in either a closed or open kiln. It has been used for centuries as a sealer for wooden boats, in roof construction and as an ingredient in soaps and shampoos. Closed Kiln – pine tar suitable for topical application is manufactured using the closed kiln method that produces a tar with extremely high levels of purity. Open Kiln – pine tar suitable for weather treating and sealing wood is manufactured using the open kiln process. The smoke and little fragments of unburned wood can come in contact with the tar and result in the creation of creosote, a known carcinogen.
