Why we love it

A bee hotel is a convenient, creative way to help the threatened solitary bee population to thrive, right in your own garden. This wooden bee hotel is designed to mimic the naturally occurring holes that solitary bees would use to nest and breed. Hang up a bee hotel, and these gentle creatures will move in to raise their young and pollinate your flowers.

Description
  • Wooden bee hotel
  • Double unit design, fixed together as one unit
  • Colourful pitched roofs & chimneys for decoration
  • A safe nesting & breeding structure for solitary bees
  • A safe place for young solitary bees to grow to maturity
  • Holes of various sizes mimic those found in the wild
  • Provides access for different varieties of solitary bees
  • Quick & easy to hang
  • A great way to support the threatened bee population
  • Attracts gentle pollinators to your garden
  • Does not attract honey bee colonies

About solitary bees:

  • There are close to 1000 solitary bee species in South Africa
  • Solitary bees are very gentle & docile; most are stingless although some species may sting in self-defence
  • Unlike honey bees, solitary bees don’t rely on a Queen to breed
  • Solitary bees don’t live in hives; they need their own space to breed

How it works:

  • A female solitary bee selects a hole of the right size & depth to be her breeding nest
  • From her chosen nest, the female will fly back & forth in your garden to collect pollen & nectar
  • She will mix the pollen & nectar into a paste & place it at the back of the hole
  • She will lay her eggs close to this mixture, to give her young the nourishment they need
  • After “filling the pantry” & laying her eggs, she will seal up the hole with various natural materials, then fly off
  • The young bees will grow up safely in the nest, feeding on the pollen & nectar mix until they’re old enough to break through the sealed door & fly off
  • Congratulations you’ve helped a new generation of bees to flourish into adulthood!

Love my bee hotel; often have solitary bee's around especially when the herbs are in bloom. Put it outside on the weekend and now patiently waiting for it's first 'bee bum' in bed ;-)
Love this bee hotel! The previous owner of our house had one and took it with to her new place. The bees loved it so we had to get a new one for them! I bought one as a gift for my brother as well, and he is thrilled with it.
Love the idea of the product. Everyone should have it. Something more to note, it takes time for occupants to come in so don’t expect a full hotel quickly. If you have access to bee pheromones then add it to your hotel.
A lovely gift idea!
